Lower fares preclude Volvo's expansion plans in the United States

Volvo Cars is announcing plans to expand at the new plant in Charleston, South Carolina, USA, said Managing Director Håkan Samuelsson at USA Today. The reason would be the higher tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on China.

Originally, it was planned to hire 1,500 people at the plant by the end of 2018 and 4,000 a few years from now. Samuelsson does not say exactly how it will change.

The Charleston plant is the first of Volvo Cars in the United States and opened in June of this year.

"We thought Charleston could build cars in China, it will not work," Samuelsson said.

Trump shows no signs of support for car taxes. He said on Twitter that US Customs had contributed to the growth of truck production in the US auto industry.
