Tuesday morning, the message was dark: the oldest woman in Europe died.

Maria Giuseppa Robucci, named Nonna Peppa, celebrated her 116th birthday on March 20th. At the time of her passing, she was the oldest woman in Europe and the second oldest person in the world.

She died in Poggio Imperiale, outside the town of Foggio, in southeastern Italy, in her father's house. The same house where she was born in 1903, writes the local newspaper Foggia Today.

Had sixteen grandchildren

Maria Giuseppa Robucci's husband, Nicola Nargiso, died in 1982 and had five children with him. Nine grandchildren and sixteen grandchildren were added later.

The secret of the long life of 116 years?

– Eat a little and healthy, never have a glass of wine or a cigarette in your mouth.

His late wife, 37, was ironically the owner of a bar, writes the Daily Mail.

Maria Giuseppa Robucci has become honorary mayor of his hometown, Poggio Imperiale 2012, and his funeral will be organized by the city.

"We are sorry, but honored to have had it as a citizen," said Poggio Imperial Mayor Alfonso D'Aloisio at Il Messaggero.
