A preschool child in Larsmo has been abused by measles, reports the Institute for Health and Social Welfare THL. Many were exposed to an infection, including daycare and a public event. A dozen of them are insufficient or not at all vaccinated.

The child went on a trip abroad with his family and was probably infected with measles in that country, according to THL. Exposed to the infection is the family of the child and its proximity. During the incubation period, the child was also placed in a day care center, visited Karleby Hospital and participated in a public event held in Karleby on 25 November, Vasa Central Hospital announced.

According to the hospital, a dozen people exposed to the infection are inadequately vaccinated or have not been vaccinated against measles.

Mesothelioma is a rare and contagious disease, reminds THL that with the Vaasa hospital district and the health district of the Middle East hospital, lesions that could have been affected are now known. This work started yesterday.

facts

measles

Measles is a highly contagious airborne disease.

The incubation period is 7 to 21 days, usually 9 to 11 days.

Symptoms include high fever, runny nose, cough, red and runny eyes, and red rashes that start in the face and neck and then spread to the rest of the body. The rash appears 3 to 5 days after the first symptoms. The fever can last up to a week.

The mesh weakens resistance to other diseases for two years and can lead to a series of sequels.

The risk of complications is higher in pregnant women, immunodeficient persons and children under one year of age.

A vaccine is offered in the Jakobstad region

Every year, a small number of measles cases are discovered in Finland, says a specialist Mia Kontio at the Institute for Health and Wellness THL.

"There has been talk of zero to five cases a year." So far this year, we have had seven cases and last year eleven cases of measles.

The account does not speculate if our measles drops seem to increase. In Europe, however, the decline has increased considerably in recent years.

"We still have a good situation in Finland, where a large part of the population is vaccinated.

Kontio does not think that the case of Larsmo is at the origin of major epidemics.

– Locally, there will surely be more cases, but by the way, this is not a danger.

Kontio says that in the Jakobstad area, has responded professionally to the case and that you are in control of the situation.

– Now, vaccines are offered to those who have not yet been vaccinated, and some have already heard of it.

The mussel is exceptionally contagious and spreads in the air. Therefore, it may be sufficient to stay in the same room as the infected person.

The incubation period is usually about ten days and the illness often starts with a high fever, inflammation of the eyes and respiratory symptoms. Eczema is visible after a few days.

The diseases to be monitored may be pneumonia caused by bacteria and, in rare cases, meningitis.

Kontio says that the person who believes to be infected should not go to a hospital or health center before calling the hospital, the health center or the phone consultation to get a consultation.

95 percent vaccinated

The measles vaccine, the MPR vaccine, is included in the general immunization program.

In Finland, 95% of the population is vaccinated against measles but, for example, in some parts of Ostrobothnia, the vaccination rate is 70%. Just Larsmo, with Korsholm and Jakobstad, has been designated as low coverage stations.

In Europe, more than 41,000 people had measles in the first half, up from 24,000 the year before and 5,200 years earlier.

Today, 85% of children in the world receive measles vaccine and the World Health Organization, WHO, estimates that the vaccine has saved more than 20 million lives.
