Every year, more than 250,000 people die from asbestos-related diseases worldwide, according to a new study by the International Commission on Occupational Safety and Health. The WHO has long used an obsolete figure: more than 100,000 cases, reports Ekot in a Swedish radio.
The list is due to new knowledge about the link between asbestos and various diseases. New statistics are also available.
In Sweden, asbestos was completely asbestos in 1982, but around 400 000 tonnes of asbestos is expected to remain in old buildings and structures throughout the country. Every year between 100 and 130 Swedes die from mesothelioma, a form of asbestos-related cancer, according to Ulf Kvarnström, who is responsible for workplace safety at the Byggnads Union.
