The National Board of Health has developed guidelines for psoriasis, a skin disease that should be studied and treated best.

For the first time, skin disease now has national guidelines on psoriasis that explain how the treatment of this disease, which affects 300,000 Swedes, should be designed.

According to the new guidelines published by the National Board of Health, every patient should be offered an individual analysis of risk factors and support to change their lifestyle. Cortisone creams, medical foot care and – in the most severe cases – climate care are other options recommended by the National Board of Health.

Psoriasis is caused by an inflammation of the skin that causes more or less severe rashes in the form of red spots that flake off and often scratch. For about 23,000 people, the symptoms are difficult and can have a major impact on the quality of life.

"If you have serious results, it may mean that you are unaware of others and that, in severe cases, it may also lead to depression due to the disease," explains Alexandra Karlén, who is responsible for project at the National Board of Health.
