A dozen Swedes – most preschool children – have been infected with salmonella. The type of disease is common in cats and small birds.

– Salmonella is present in many animal species, there is nothing new in itself. The majority of people infected in this case may be adults who prefer to wash their hands when handling a sick cat, a cat box or perhaps a bird table where the birds feed, says the medical doctor, Gunlög Rasmussen, infectious, at SVT Örebro.

According to Rasmussen, it is not enough to alarm many cases of salmonella transmission from cat / bird to human. Most Swedes affected by the disease contract infection abroad through food. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and sometimes vomiting. The infection is usually not treated and disappears of itself in a few days.
