Record cats in Sweden suffered salmonella last year.

And the increase continues – mainly in Uppsala County.

Small birds are suspected to be the main cause of the outbreak.

Never before have so many cases of salmonella in cats been reported as last year. The beginning of 2019 also saw high prices compared to previous years, reports SVT.

Nearly one-third of the cases reported in January came from Uppsala County.

– We have a theory that the increase in the number of salmonella cases in cats is related to the bird population, says Elina Lahti, epidemiologist at the State Veterinary Institute. (SVA), at the SVT.

Why has the region around Uppsala and Stockholm been hit so hard, however, is not clear.

In January, 45 cases of salmonella were reported in cats in Uppsala County. In 2015, only 5 cases were reported throughout Sweden.
