Last year, nearly 5,700 children under the age of 14 received antidepressants, according to welfare.

– Mental health problems in children and adolescents are a growing problem, said Peter Salmi, investigator at the National Health Board of the Siren News Agency.

The last ten over the years, the number of people on antidepressants per person has increased and most have increased among children. The proportion of patients aged 4 to 9 and 10 to 14 years has tripled in ten years.

In 2017, 431 children received antidepressants, 300 more than ten years ago. Among children aged 10 to 14, the number of patients increased from 1,700 to 5,200 in 10 years, but the National Board of Health did not find an answer as to why the increase was the most important among the youngest.

– There would be more or less eligible hypotheses in this case. But we know that the increase is occurring across the entire youth group, suggesting that there may be causes in environments where most young people are staying, "says Salmi at Siren News Agency.

In Skåne County, the number of patients aged 0 to 14 years old who received antidepressants over the course of one year increased from 210 to 2017 to 651 people last year.
