Sun's UV rays reach record levels this summer – then you protect yourself

It is mostly in Denmark that record levels were measured in terms of UV radiation from the sun. But it is not just our western neighbor country that has noticed the current situation.

Swedish radio P4 Kristianstad writes Sunday that UV radiation has reached very unusual levels even in Sweden. The Meteorological Institute, SMHI, now calls for caution by staying in the sun.

The sun's UV rays tear hard on the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer. And even if we are only in the middle of summer, there are already dangerous levels.

UV radiation increases

In Denmark, the UV levels according to SMHI are expected to be the highest in 19 years. In Sweden, the periods are not measured in the same way, but according to SMHI, there can be record high levels even in Skåne in July.

– The month of July has just started, but it started with a relatively thin layer of ozone and ultraviolet radiation, "says Weine Josefsson, UV expert at SMHI, at P4 Kristianstad.

The summer in Sweden was extremely hot and record temperatures were measured in May. In May, May was the warmest in decades and strong sun contributes to the increase in UV radiation.

If you go out in the sun, you are advised to protect yourself with sunscreen or to stay in the shade.

Protect yourself from the sun

Avoid sun exposure between 11am and 3pm during the summer. In particular, care must be taken if you have sensitive skin.

The sun hat and clothes are a good idea if you stay in the sun during the day.

Use sun protection lotions with a high sun protection factor. At the local pharmacy, there is usually advice and help.

Children's skin is extremely sensitive and therefore should be protected.

Keep track of liver spots or other skin changes. Wounds that do not heal must be examined. If you are uncertain or worried, you should consult a doctor.
