This winter, it will be plowed earlier and more often in Norrstrand, Kvarnberget, Viken and Herrhagen. This promises the municipality of Karlstad.

The winter is at the entrance and the first snow of the season has already fallen. The snow removal of the municipality is a subject of permanent discussion and one of the inhabitants of Karlstad often complains.

However, in a press release, the municipality writes that the season will focus on simplifying accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. As a result, the municipality now chooses to plow a little earlier and more often in central residential areas such as Norrstrand, Kvarnberget, Viken and Herrhagen.

According to gatuchef Stefan Björkman, it is already four centimeters of snow in these residential areas:

"We noticed last year that it was difficult to handle large amounts of snow in these residential areas, we have to put the snow somewhere when we plow, then the ground gets on the sidewalks, which is a problem for pedestrians, cyclists and homeowners, so we're doing this to make it easier for others, "he said in the press release.

To facilitate

The municipality hopes that the anticipated clearing will reduce the amount of snow remaining after each plowing, which will facilitate the movement of pedestrians and cyclists in the area. However, other residential areas will still be cleaned eight centimeters.

The municipality of Karlstad is moving towards a certain priority program: priority is given to priority cycle paths from residential areas, which have two centimeters of snow. Other pedestrian and cycle tracks, such as bus lines, traffic lines and main streets, are clear with four centimeters of snow.

A lot of snow in winter

Last season was unusually snowy. The last time that so much snow fell in the municipality of Karlstad was in 2010/2011. And the municipality has a large road network, according to Stefan Björkman:

– 112 miles, it is as far as Karlstad in Berlin. It goes without saying that it takes time to erase even if we are 100 employees and machines that help, says Stefan Björkman.

112 miles of road network

The road network includes the municipality of Karlstad by:

• 25 miles of walking and bike path

• 45 km of motorways and

• 42 miles of individual roads

Planning a villa area takes about ten hours, according to the municipality of Karlstad.

Snowshoeing on a regular roadway takes about one hour per 10 km. It takes four hours to salt about ten miles of road with five vehicles. Scratching two and a half kilometers of walking and cycling track takes four hours with three machines.

Have two hours

Once the snow is removed, employees can focus on eliminating plows and ropes.

– After being called, you have two hours to start the work, so it should stay a few steps before the weather. If there is a lot of snow at the crossings after villagator plowing and the disappearance of the plow, she will return a little later to remove the piles, explains Stefan Björkman.
