Swiss teachers do a lot of unpaid work to cope with their workload. This is the conclusion of a large-scale scientific survey on the workload of the teacher association. The association interviewed more than 10,000 teachers.
The survey shows that teachers regularly pay between 8.6% and 16% of unpaid overtime, depending on their level. With a reference workload of 1916 hours per year, there is an average of 248 unpaid overtime hours for German Swiss teachers. According to the survey, they actually spend 2164 hours.
Overtime worth millions
Compared to the last survey of 2009, the number of overtime hours worked throughout Switzerland decreased by 167 hours. Nevertheless, Beat W. Zemp, President of Education, said: "Swiss teachers are working overtime worth several hundred million francs.The policy must ensure that the work is affordable with the available time resources .
According to the survey, teachers voluntarily reduced their workload to avoid overwork. But this has a high price: for a part-time workload, it is necessary to proportionally incur additional overtime. The Teachers' Association therefore requires fewer mandatory lessons for teachers, more classroom resources and more time for parenting.
