The telecommunications companies run the first 5G network in Switzerland. On Wednesday, the Confederation granted Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt a license for the commercial use of 5G networks. Swisscom and Sunrise have already communicated the connection of the first antennas.
A map of the Federal Office of Communication (Bakom) indicates active 5G antenna sites. In total, just under 340 sites are currently active. They are distributed throughout Switzerland. Only in Ticino does not send a 5G antenna yet. Still in the canton of Geneva, where parliament voted for a moratorium on 5G antennas, several branches are active – as well as in the canton of Vaud, whose parliament has taken a similar decision.
No building permit required
In addition to smaller cities such as Neckertal SG or Füllinsdorf BL, cities are also well developed. Already around 50 5G antenna sites are being developed in the Zurich area, there are 26 in Berne, three are active in Winterthur and two in Lucerne. According to information from the Bakoms in the city of Basel, there is no 5G.
Existing antenna sites have been upgraded for the first 5G networks. Telecommunication companies do not usually require building permits if the electric field strength has not changed or little changed. This means that exposure to radiation from the site does not increase.
The Bundesrat wants new antennas
On Wednesday, the Federal Council also discussed 5G technology. He entrusted the Federal Office of the Environment with the task of collecting and systematically informing the radiation exposure. This is intended to promote a "rational discussion of the subject". According to the state government, the population presents latent discomfort. In addition, an expert report on the effects of radiation is expected in summer.
In addition, the Federal Council has paved the way for "adaptive antennas". These record the location of phones and devices and focus their radiation on them. Conventional antennas, however, emit uniform radiation. The advantage of the new antennas is that the places where there are no users are less irradiated and that the transmission capacity is increased.
According to his own statements, Sunrise currently provides 152 sites with 5G, a site being considered developed when 80% of the population is affected. According to its own information, Swisscom currently covers 54 cities and plans to provide 5G to 90% of the population by the end of the year. However, compatible mobile phones are not yet available in Switzerland. From May, the first 5G mobile phone will arrive at Swisscom stores (approximately 20 minutes).
