As temperatures drop, not only do men and animals have less desire to practice outdoor activities, even electric vehicle batteries overcome the blues of the winter. During the coldest months, the model's reach loss is 70%. On average, you have to expect a 50% drop.

But that's not all: recharging electric cars takes much longer at low temperatures. The battery power drops below 10 degrees Celsius and the charge is slowed down compared to values in the negative range. Long loading times and insufficient reach – these are the two most cited electronic mobility stands. Winter is therefore a real stress test for owners of electric vehicles.
Smart heating
But why do you need more energy in the winter? The situation is simple: because of the cold, friction in the drive is much higher, which requires more energy. The heating of the rear and inner bezel as well as the fan also consume electricity, but are not needed in the summer. In addition, cold batteries are not very effective in ice weather.
E-drivers are the pleasure of winter brakes, but not defenseless. In this way, the starting time of many electric cars can be adjusted during charging, which warms the battery. This should be used because a cold battery is far from being as effective as a hot battery. With this method alone, you can increase the range up to 20%. It is also useful to heat the electric car before the journey, and preferably during the loading process. Thus, the heating energy comes from the charging cable and not from the battery. This also reduces the range loss.
Another effective way to increase the range is to dress warmly. Especially for short distances, it's perfectly logical. Of course, a warm driving cab is preferable. And while it may seem odd to sit in the car, wrapped in a thick bag, it's better to just stand still with an empty battery. If you prefer to heat the car, you can only use seat and flywheel heating, because they require less energy than the air conditioning system, but also give the body a feeling of warmth. If you do not want to do without heating, increase it gradually. This is more effective than a full boost at the maximum temperature.
Precious heat pumps
The sun also helps electric cars, which do not even need solar cells, because the winter sun warms the battery and the driving position. Parking the electric car in the sun during the day and in a garage during the night is a good idea. Even while driving in eco mode, avoiding high speeds above 110 km / h and the benefits of braking energy, the battery benefits, which applies to electric cars in general. But during the cold season, indoor heating, windshield and windshields, seats and steering wheels, ventilation and vehicle lighting need more energy than in summer.
The problem of winter energy has not gone unnoticed by car manufacturers. Some of them have reacted to this with integrated heat pumps: in the new Renault Zoe, for example, there is one in the interior. The Hyundai Kona is available as standard but from a certain level of equipment. However, VW and BMW require eGolf and Stromern BMW i3 and BMW i3 currently still in supplement. According to BMW, the range of the heat pump should increase by more than 30%.
