Essen (dpa) – After one of the biggest medical scandals in recent years, a pharmacist from the Ruhr region has been imprisoned for 12 years for drugs against contaminated cancer.
According to Essen District Court, the 48-year-old has stretched essential drugs for years to fund his luxurious lifestyle. In addition, a lifetime professional ban was imposed on Bottrop's man on Friday.
During the process, the pharmacist did not comment on the claims. The verdict is for violation of the Law on Medicines and Fraud. The consequences of under-dosed chemotherapy in patients remain unclear. The process provided no reliable information.
In pharmacy individually prepared infusion solutions were produced, the "quality of which was not significantly reduced". The damages for health insurance rise according to the calculations of the judges about 17 million euros. This profit obtained illegally is collected by the state.
"We are confident that at least 14,500 drugs were underdeveloped between 2012 and 2016," said Judge Johannes Hidding. This is the result of a comparison between the drugs purchased and billed. In addition, judges are responsible for major violations of hygiene. The defendant had never been seen entering the laboratory in town attire. "Hygiene is extremely important, especially for immunocompromised cancer patients," the verdict says.
The accused has greatly benefited from the crimes economically. "He acted out of greed," Hidding said. "Luxury products have played a big role for him."
The 48-year-old man was arrested on November 29, 2016 and has been detained since then. During a search in the Bottroper pharmacy, sub-metered infusion solutions were obtained, which were ready for delivery. The drug scandal was revealed by two of the defendant's employees. For their revelations, they received the German Whistleblower Award in 2017.
The prize is awarded to persons who take risks to expose grievances that have become familiar to them in the performance of their official or official duties.
