The Polar fitness app has leaked information and military sites to the public. The Finnish company has now withdrawn the offer.
Soldiers and intelligence agents have unintentionally disclosed data on their missions through the application of Fitness Polar, the Finnish manufacturer of sports watches, fitness and heart rate monitors. This attracted journalists from the Dutch newspaper De Correspondent and investigative journalist Foeke Postma of Bellingcat. "We can find Western military personnel in Afghanistan on the polar side," said Postma. In just a few clicks, a high-ranking officer can be found on an airbase with nuclear weapons in the morning.
Finds data from about 6000 polar users, including soldiers from various countries as well as the Federal Police FBI and the NSA. The data collected included private addresses of US citizens in the Baghdad International Security Zone and Russian soldiers in Crimea. Polar pointed out that only the data had been published by users who had activated the location. Meanwhile, the Finnish manufacturer has closed its location location function
In January, the Pentagon announced a review of the use of fitness applications by army personnel. Previously, a map of the movement profiles of US soldiers in conflict areas was published by a service of the company Strava Labs (Computerworld reported)
