(awp) The euro rose on Friday. The common currency benefited from statements made last night by US President Donald Trump, who had criticized the US Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes in a television interview. In the morning, however, the euro rose only slightly and traded at 1.1663 US dollars
Against the franc, the euro rose to 1.1687 Fr. from 1.1632 Fr. the evening before. The dollar traded at 0.9887 Swiss francs at a level similar to the previous day, as the US currency weakened below the franc against the franc.
The comments of the US president weighed on the dollar from Thursday night. In return, the exchange rate of the euro has risen sharply in a short time. Shortly before the weekend, Trump's statements were still having an effect, they told market watchers. In an interview with the CNBC television channel, Trump said that he was "not enthusiastic" about rising interest rates. He also said, "I do not like that we put all the work into the economy and then I see the interest rates go up."
Trump's spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders then said the president respected the Fed's independence. The Fed itself did not want to comment, but referred to a statement by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell the week before. As a result, the Fed does not consider political considerations.
