In recent years, vitamin D deficiency has been described as a generalized disease. With vitamin D supplements, the deficit has been declared a struggle. In pharmacies all over Switzerland, drops and tablets have been sold. Now, it turns out that vitamin D in many preparations is too high – and you can poison yourself with it.

During the winter, the subject of vitamin D is on everyone's lips – literally. A vitamin deficiency in the sun was considered dangerous: vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, heart disease and even cancer. The main source of vitamin is the sun. Since the majority of the population does not spend the summer in the sun and protects themselves with sunscreen, the body can not accumulate vitamin D storage for the winter.

What is vitamin D really doing?

Now, several studies have questioned the hype surrounding this vitamin. It is clear that vitamin D is important for the absorption of calcium and phosphates. Thus, it plays an important role in the regulation of the bone substance. Since many of the body's organs have vitamin D receptors, it has been suggested that they also help to fight against non-skeletal conditions such as asthma, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, diabetes, and diabetes. depression, dementia and multiple sclerosis. This is accompanied by the observation that in many diseases a low level of vitamin D is associated.

The International Institute for Prevention Research Lyon has now tested these hypotheses and found that a daily intake of 10 to 20 micrograms of vitamin D had no effect on diseases that do not affect the bones. The exceptions are asthma and respiratory tract infections, which responded positively to this treatment – but not enough to recommend vitamin D as preventative protection.

What are the disadvantages of vitamin D?

The trend to vitamin D already has devastating consequences: in Germany, several cases of vitamin D intoxication due to excessive consumption of vitamin D supplements are already known. Since vitamin D is fat-soluble and can not be excreted in the urine, a vitamin overdose causes poisoning of the liver. A team of researchers from the University of Uppsala in Sweden also discovered that too low and too high a vitamin D level was associated with an increased risk of cancer deaths.

Dietary supplements are overdosed

A study by Öko-Test showed how unconsciously overdose of vitamin D – and therefore poison oneself. To this end, Ökotest has tested 21 Vitamin D supplements for its Vitamin D content, of which five are over-the-counter medicines and 16 are regular dietary supplements. The recommendation of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) of 20 micrograms of vitamin per daily dose was taken as an indication. The conclusion is frightening: the majority of dietary supplements exceed the recommended daily intake. Eight have high levels, four reach the maximum of 25 micrograms and four more clearly exceed the peak – up to 42.5 micrograms. The drugs, however, were all in the green.

How to recognize vitamin D deficiency

The preventative use of vitamin D without deficiency can be dangerous. Therefore, preventive measures against bone loss and other skeletal diseases should only be taken after consultation with a specialist. Frequent disorders, fatigue, bones, hair loss, back pain, muscle and bone pain and poor wound healing are classic signs of vitamin D deficiency. If you suspect a deficiency, the values must first be checked by professionals and treated in consultation with a doctor.
