At the MotoGP trials in Jerez, Honda and Ducati started in force. At 3 pm, Marc Márquez was at the top. Roookie Joan Mir (Suzuki) is crushed. KTM with pole Espargaró only on the square 15.
In Jerez, MotoGP teams have the last chance to test before the winter holidays on Wednesday and Thursday. At first, the first riders took almost two hours to venture on the track and they stayed busy at lunchtime. Shortly after 1 pm, the session had to be interrupted because Joan Mir crashed on his Suzuki. The MotoGP rookie underwent control at the medical center and was able to give the go-ahead altogether, leaving him uninjured.
Jorge Lorenzo took the lead at 2 pm on his black Honda, finishing in 1:38 with a time of 1:39 min. Ducati factory rider Andrea Dovizioso reduced the time needed to climb to the top in 1: 38.519, before world champion Marc Márquez only took 0.002 seconds faster.
Márquez was still ahead of Dovizioso at 15h but Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda) was able to climb back to third place, ahead of Lorenzo. The fifth fastest time was achieved by Álvaro Bautista, who had already said goodbye to the MotoGP category and is part of the Ducati Superbike team in 2019. Because the test driver Michele Pirro has not yet recovered of an operation, Bautista jumped for the test at Jerez on the Ducati.
The first five places are therefore exclusively Ducati and Honda riders. Yamaha factory driver Maverick Viñales follows in sixth place ahead of Aprilia's Andrea Iannone, who has at least 20 laps in every laps. The busiest driver is currently Álex Rins with 46 laps. Until 17:30, the MotoGP aces still have time to improve.
In Aprilia, Matteo Baiocco, the test pilot far too slow, was called because Aleix Espargaró had to cancel his candidacy because of a gastritis. In addition to new rookie Andrea Iannone, new test rider Bradley Smith is back at RS-GP 18.
