Wellington – In New Zealand, the telecommunications sector must not use any equipment from Chinese network company Huawei to implement the new 5G mobile communication standard. A similar ban was issued on Wednesday, with Wellington's intelligence service referring to security risks.
The request was made by telecommunications provider Spark New Zealand. With this decision, New Zealand joins the attitude of other western industrialized countries. For example, Ericsson and Nokia, the world's largest supplier of network equipment, have been banned from joining the 5G network this year in Australia.
Fear of espionage
Even in the United States, Chinese people are excluded from most businesses. The two countries are afraid of being more exposed to Chinese government espionage thanks to the networks built by Huawei. Such concerns also exist in Germany. Especially behind the scenes, some politicians push for exclusion.
In addition, according to the Wall Street Journal, the US government is pressuring companies in allied countries to avoid Huawei's telecom technology.
Huawei has now said it wants to address the concerns. In total, more than 20 5G contracts have been signed with telecommunication companies around the world. The company helped set up the 4G network in New Zealand. In Switzerland, Huawei is Sunrise's mobile network provider. (SDA)
