The change of coach from Raphael Wicky to Marcel Koller has brought nothing. On the contrary: under Koller, the FCB earns less points!
July 28 in Neuchâtel. It is still hot at 10 pm in La Maladière. Basel played directly against Xamax 1: 1. Two days earlier, FCB had sacked coach Raphael Wicky after only two matches. Basel reacted early in the season with a 1: 2 defeat at home against St. Gallen and a 1: 2 victory in the Champions League qualifier against PAOK Thessaloniki.
And now, the athletic director Marco Streller is in the mixed area of the Maladière, with red cheeks and struggles to explain the separation of Wicky. The results of the test matches and the two defeats of the first two serious battles were decisive. And then, Streller pronounces this phrase, which still resonates today: "I know, my next cartridge needs to stay in place."
On August 1st, Streller got the coach of his dreams with Marcel Koller. In the first seven games, Koller remains undefeated. Then comes the unexpected end of the Europa League playoffs against Apollon Limassol and, three and a half weeks later, Bern's shame, while the Kollers FCB against YB (1: 7) collapses.
The cartridge is not seated
Now that almost half of the Super League season has been played, one may wonder if Streller's last boss has sat down. And the answer is very clear: no!
Koller participates in 13 Super League games averaging 1.77 points per game. Under Wicky, it had been in the season before 1.92 points.
The rest of Koller on YB is fabulous 16 points after 15 laps. At the same time, there were 7 points under Wicky a year ago.
Fischer the most successful coach of the FCB
One or the other in Basel will now turn to Germany with nostalgia. Former FCB coach, Urs Fischer, mixes second division with Union Berlin and ranks third with Union. Fischer was by far the most successful FCB coach in the last 20 years. In 2016/17, he won the double with Basel and entered the Super League with an average of 2.39 points per game. In the 2015/16 championship, he also earned an outstanding rate of 2.31 points per game.
Since the other master coach of recent years can not keep up. Neither Paulo Sousa (2.17) nor Murat Yakin (2.05), Heiko Vogel (2.17) and Thorsten Fink (2.07) are far behind Fischer. They were all, as well as Christian Gross (score: 2.04), but much more successful than Koller. We must go back to the 1998/99 season to meet a coach whose average was worse than that of Koller: Guy Mathez finished the National League A in 5th place with a points average of 1.38.
