We know that you should not drink too much sugary drinks such as coca-cola and lemonade. However, pure fruit juices also present health risks. According to a new study, their consumption increases the risk of premature death as well as drinks containing industrial sugar.
Even the daily intake of 0.35 liters of sugary drinks – including fruit juices – increases the risk of mortality, according to a study by researchers at Emory University in Atlanta and the University of Chicago. 39, Alabama: 11%. Another 0.35 liter increases the risk of up to 24%. The researchers therefore recommend not to consume fruit juice. The scientists published their results in the English language journal "Jama Network Open".
Data of 13,440 people evaluated – a lot of obese
The researchers evaluated data from 13,440 adults (including 60% men) aged 45, who regularly documented their drinking patterns in questionnaires for at least six years. It should be noted that about 70% of them were overweight or obese, but did not suffer from heart disease or diabetes. At follow-up, 1,000 deaths of all types and 168 deaths from coronary heart disease were documented.
Other factors play a role
The risk of premature death is a purely statistical value. Exact covers can not be made. The authors also point out that other factors play a role and that further investigations are needed.
Sugary drinks promote obesity
It was already known that sugar-containing beverages favored obesity and the resulting diseases, whether the beverages contained natural fructose or industrial sugar, since they all consisted of sugar and water.
Fructose increases blood lipid levels – glucose promotes diabetes
Unlike glucose, for example, the metabolism of fructose occurs almost exclusively in the liver. As a result, fructose negatively affects blood lipid levels, markers of inflammation and blood pressure, while high glucose consumption is associated with insulin resistance (resulting in cardiovascular disease) and diabetes. Regardless of the weight status, as the researchers explain. In addition, increased consumption of fructose may stimulate a hormonal response that promotes fat deposition in the center. This, in turn, is a high risk factor for cardiovascular disease. There are also indications that, in general, calories consumed in liquid form can increase the risk of obesity.
Why is fruit juice even better than lemonade
Overall, researchers consider the consumption of fruit juice (preferably juice) on lemonade or fruit nectar (with added sugar), but they are still recommended because they also contain vitamins, phytochemicals and fiber – this should not be excessive, however.
The American Academy of Pediatrics, for example, recommends a maximum of 0.17 liter of fruit juice a day for children from one to six years old. Children over seven years old and adults should consume a maximum of 0.23 liters per day on average.
Attention, fructose: so much sugar contains fruit
