Operation, tempo and reach should be the winning arguments of Devolo's latest mesh starter kit, the multiroom WiFi kit. PCtipp has tested the network combo.

What sets Devolo apart from other network devices is technology: devices are based on PowerLine communication technology, or PLC. This uses conventional 230V power lines from an apartment / house as support for the network. This makes an ordinary outlet a kind of "network outlet". For transmission, the data is converted and modulated on a carrier signal sent by the lines. At the end point, the useful signal is recovered from the "compacted" signal. Thus, the power grid and the data network do not interfere with each other. The devices use appropriate filters that ensure, for example, that the input of a standard lamp or magnetic fields of housings, microwave ovens or external signals from DECT phones does not harm the the transmission of the useful signal.

Another special feature of Devolo's modern CPL adapter set is the so-called MIMO function (Multiple Input Multiple Output). Each adapter uses the three available circuit wires (L-phase, N-neutral, and PE protective conductor) to achieve a fast and stable gigabit LC network. With currently up to 2400 Mbit / s and a typical range of up to 500 meters in typical home wiring, the Magic-2 kit can therefore also be used for large spaces. Thirdly, the Devolo model combines fast PLC technology with wireless ac / n radio (866/300 Mbps maximum) to further increase the network radius.
