Acquittal for the former president of Brazil in a lawsuit

The case is not related to the long-term prison sentence that Lula is currently serving for corruption and money laundering

. The court of appeal upheld Lula's conviction of the previous year and even increased the sentence from nine and a half to twelve years and a month.

Lula led Brazil from 2003 to 2010. He is accused of being the biggest Brazilian president during his presidency. The OAS construction company donated a luxury apartment in the coastal town of Guarujá in the state of São Paulo and received a large sum of money in cash. The construction company would have been favored in exchange for contracts with the state-owned oil company Petrobras.

In addition, and in the acquittal proceedings, she will be tried in five other cases against Lula. The 72-year-old man rejects any allegation and is victim of a plot to block his candidacy for a third term.

In Brazil, presidential elections are scheduled for October, during which Lula will compete. Polls see him despite his detention as the most promising candidate in the elections.
