An allegedly racist attack on Italian disk launcher Daisy Osakue provoked outrage and debate in his homeland.

A so-called racist attack on Italian disk launcher Daisy Osakue has caused indignation and debate in his homeland. The 22-year-old was in Moncalieri, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, aboard a passing car in which two men were sitting and had been thrown out.

The athlete of Nigerian descent from Turin was to be treated at the hospital thereafter. If she can participate in the European Championships in Berlin (August 6th to 12th), she is still open.

"You did not want to attack me, but just somebody with dark skin," Osakue said. She also stated that she did not have to undergo eye surgery and was hoping to attend the European Championship.

The attack against Osakue does not only concern the Italian sports world. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte telephoned Osakue on Monday night during his visit to US President Donald Trump in Washington.

"I expressed to Daisy Osakue my solidarity and that of the government. It became the victim of a reprehensible act.I wanted her to resume her sports activities as soon as possible", Mr. Conte said, according to media reports.

The attack on Osakue fuels the debate over whether the populist government of Italy nurtures racism in Italy with its severe immigration course. Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the ruling Lega party, described the warnings of a racist wave in Italy as "stupidity".

Italian athletes and sports officials reacted indignantly to the attack. Giovanni Malago, president of the Italian Olympic Committee of CONI, condemned the attack on Osakue and called for an anti-racist campaign

Italian soccer champion Juventus Turin expressed in a tweet the hope that Osakue at the European Championships participate in Berlin and celebrate great successes. The idol of goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon of Paris St. Germain tweeted "Forza Daisy"

Statements of solidarity were made by among others by the Italian swimmer Federica Pellegrini. Italian volleyball player Valentina Diouf was shocked by the Osakue attack. "Italy is threatening a return to the Middle Ages," she warned.
