The president of all Swiss academies orders sanctions for intimidating teachers. After all, the pressure exerted by doctoral students is great in all universities.
After the case of intimidation at ETH Zurich, several universities are reacting and apparently want to remove the thesis supervisor, as reported by "Schweiz am Wochenende". In the future, Ph.D. students will not be taught by one person.
"At each university, professors are at the limit of doctoral students," says Antonio Loprieno, president of the Swiss Academies of Arts and former rector of the University of Basel. Loprieno had to face serious cases during the last ten years of his mandate.
US measures should help
In 2007, he had to leave his professorship in the Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy, which broke with all his colleagues and doctoral students, which resulted in litigation. Because the teachers are almost non-terminable. "Apart from layoffs, universities can hardly punish mistakes," he says.
He is convinced that we need measures: and those like in the United States. There, the management of the university could, in the case of poor management of staff, the next salary level of the teachers' strike – or even reduce the salary for a few months. Even the best universities would apply these penalties. "It would be a wise option for Switzerland," said Loprieno.
