It has only been six months since the FDP Geneva was in full swing. During the cantonal elections, she was able to extend her supremacy as the most powerful party and Pierre Maudet was re-elected as the only council of government in the first round of voting.
The party wanted to take this momentum in the federal election. The initial situation was exceptional because the two previous left-wing councilors were no longer present and the canton of Geneva was given an additional seat on the national council.
But everything looks different now. Instead of being strengthened and united, the Geneva FDP is weakened and divided. It is divided into a pro camp and a counter-maudet camp.
Party colleague calls for resignation
With the National Council Benedict Genecand Monday for the first time publicly, a politician from the FDP in Geneva asked for the resignation of Pierre Maudet. He was far from being the only one to believe it, Genecand told Radio RTS. Maudet has lost his credibility and trust and he can not imagine how he could find him.
But Maudet still clings to his office and seems to be convinced that he can not be charged with criminal charges. This explains why he wants to save time.
He can always count on supporters of the FDP in Geneva. They gathered enough signatures last week to call an extraordinary general meeting. As a result, the Board was not able to decide to drop Maudet or continue to support him.
Decision postponed until next year
Today, Tuesday, it has come out that this GV will only take place in early January. The FDP Geneva is not only divided but also paralyzed. Only Maudet can resign herself. The council could only exclude it from the party.
For the moment, the cantonal FDP has Pierre Maudet under control and he can not say anything about the national FDP. In doing so, it is likely to suffer damage beyond the canton's borders.
Too bad for the FDP as a whole
If the FDP wants to win overall in the federal election next fall, it depends on the francophone part of the country. It does not need a seat in Geneva, but also in the other stronghold of the FDP, the canton of Vaud. This also gives an additional seat to the National Council. Maudet was not just downstairs herself. He is tearing up his party more and more.
