Bamako (APA / AFP / DPA) – In the West African crisis state of Mali, a new president will be elected on Sunday. The approximately eight million eligible voters can choose between 24 candidates – among them, President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who since 2013 requests another term and the best chances are awarded.

However, the opposition accuses it of not having stabilized the country where jihadist rebel groups are active. The main challenger of Keita, the opposition leader, Soumaila Cisse (68), could get enough votes according to the opinion of the experts to make a second round of voting necessary. It would take place in two weeks. The first results of the Sunday election are expected within 48 hours.

The international community hopes that the elections will give a new impetus to the peace process. The UN deployed a peacekeeping mission to Mali in 2013 to stabilize the country and prevent jihadists from taking power. Austria participates in Malian missions of the UN and EU (EU) with four or ten soldiers.
