Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was arrested on his return to his country. Sharif and his daughter, Maryam, were arrested Friday by anti-corruption agents after landing in Lahore.
Local authorities said Saturday night. The two people were also shipped to the capital Islamabad. A court in Islamabad sentenced Sharif to ten years in prison for corruption last week in absentia.
The verdict marks a major setback for Sharif's ruling Muslim League ahead of the July 25 legislative elections. The campaign was broken Friday by a suicide bombing that killed at least 128 people in the city, authorities said.

Sharif was charged with bribery last October. He was reveled in the revelations of the so-called Panama Papers. They report three of his children to tax evasion and money laundering. The Supreme Court of Pakistan sent Sharif back in July 2017 for corruption as prime minister. He was the 15th head of government in the 70-year history of Pakistan to be deposed before the end of his term.
In April of this year, the Supreme Court banned him from all political life. The Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) is now led by his brother Shahbaz Sharif. He is currently the head of the government of Punjab, Pakistan's largest province. (chk / sda)
