The circulation of Klaas Heufer collecting money to save refugees in the Mediterranean
TV presenter Klaas Heufer-Umlauf wants to charter ships to rescue refugees on the Mediterranean. To finance this, he launched a crowdfunding and asks for donations.
Saving refugees from the Mediterranean should not be a crime, said Heufer-Umlauf in a video: "That's what common sense tells me."
However, all rescue vessels of humanitarian organizations are stuck in the ports. Italy and Malta use hard means against refugee rescuers. Recently, Malta had even banned the start of an aid organization. By plane, rescuers sought air for the boats in distress.
Jan Böhmermann has already received more than 176 000 euros
With his commitment, Klaas Heufer is not alone: at the end of June, his friend and TV competitor Jan Böhmermann has already started a crowdfunding to raise funds for the legal support of the crew "Lifeline".
The ship of a German aid organization for refugees had to stay close to 230 migrants for nearly a week on the high seas, because Spain and the United States had a large number of refugees. Italy had refused him berthing.
Finally, the vessel was allowed to enter a port of Malta – where the master of the rescue vessel was subsequently put on trial. More than 176 000 euros have been collected to support the rescue teams even before the end of crowdfunding
