Even the habit of drinking tea three times a day at over 60 degrees Celsius increases the risk of cancer by 90%, according to a study recently published by the Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Incidentally, the same goes for tea, cocoa and other hot drinks, because the development of cancer is not favored by any ingredient, but only by the temperature too high. The reason is that the hot liquid irritates the sensitive mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, which can lead to minor injuries or even inflammation in the long term. Once the DNA is damaged, it can quickly lead to the growth of malignant tumors.

Large-scale study with more than 50,000 participants
In this study, the behavior of 50,045 Iranians aged between 40 and 75 over four years (2004-2008) in the consumption of tea was examined. Subsequently, these people were followed for another ten years, 317 of whom had previously had esophageal cancer. Most of the affected people had previously stated that they preferred to drink their very hot tea (70 degrees Celsius). For researchers, further evidence shows that there is actually a significant relationship between the consumption of cancer in the hot state and the esophagus cancer.

General rule: let the drink cool for at least four minutes
In general, all drinks under 60 degrees Celsius are considered harmless. For safety reasons, researchers recommend that you always let their coffee or tea cool for four minutes before drinking.

In many countries, tea is traditionally very hot
As in Iran, tea is traditionally drunk very hot in China, Turkey and South America. For example, a prospective observational study conducted by the Beijing University in 2018 brought alarming news. Unlike Iran, where alcohol and smoking are culturally less of a problem (at least in public), both are prevalent among Chinese men. Here, it has been shown that the risk of esophageal cancer is further multiplied by five when hot tea is consumed with tobacco and 15 grams of alcohol or more (spread throughout the day) .
