(afp) Security forces killed at least 10 people, including two minors, in anti-government demonstrations in Nicaragua. Police and paramilitary forces have acted in several opposition strongholds against the population. This was announced Sunday by the Nicaraguan Association of Human Rights (ANPDH). Six of the dead were civilians. In addition, about 20 people were injured.
According to the ANPDH, incidents occurred in the town of Masaya, 30 kilometers south of the capital Managua, as well as in the nearby towns of Niquinohomo, Catarina and Monimbó. The president of the ANPDH, Alvaro Leiva, stressed that it was a preliminary assessment and that the identity of the victims and their age should be examined further. Leiva blamed the authorities for failing to comply with the request to rescue the wounded. He warned the population that snipers were on their way
The riots in Nicaragua began in mid-April, when security forces violently cracked down on anti-retreat protests. Since then, protests have spread to the whole country. They are against the authoritarian style of government of President Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo. The former guerrilla ruled Nicaragua from 1979 to 1990 and again for eleven years. His current term ends officially in January 2022.
