For health reasons, the Japanese Emperor Akihito canceled all appointments at the beginning of the week. The 84-year-old man had had vertigo, sweated profusely and complained of nausea, the imperial court said Monday.

Early in the morning, Empress Michiko had called a palace doctor. This has, among other things, found insufficient blood circulation in the brain. The monarch was therefore prescribed bed rest. The condition would continue to be monitored, it was said.

The two emperors were to meet Princess Ayako on Monday to congratulate for their engagement with a businessman. The Empress Michiko then made the appointment alone

For health reasons, Kaiser Akihito – the first Japanese monarch for about 200 years – wants to abdicate on April 30, 2019. His eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, must succeed him.
