Bites on teachers force you to sit down and take note of them. The teachers' association wishes to meet the difficulties of the school of integration with separate rooms and more curative educators.
Since the summer holidays, three teachers have been bitten by students. This shows that teachers are more and more often victims of violence by students. This is partly the case of elementary school students or kindergarten teachers.
The Voluntary School Synod (FSS), the Basel Teachers' Association, suspects social changes as a possible cause: "More and more children are either overprotected or neglected," said Marianne Schwegler, Vice President of the FSS. For example, tolerance to frustration or personal motivation suffers, which is very disadvantageous for the development of the child. "In part, primary school children are socially and emotionally at the same level as toddlers," she describes the problem. In addition to analytical skills, the school should focus more and more on these characteristics.

She herself has a prominent scar in her left forearm, where she was bitten by an 8-year-old student in a day school. She had taken the disturbing student aside and wanted to explain to him in front of the room that it would not work. He insulted her, beat her, and kicked her. "When I then held him for my protection, he bit hard," said Schwegler. Another teacher then took care of him in another room.
She then reported the 8-year-old girl. Since his family had a lot in common, he was taken to a house. But her life had changed after this dramatic experience: she reduced her teaching and engaged after a transitional phase in the regular school of the FSS.
Teachers demand more resources
Since the Basel schools have been working on the integration model, which has been the case since joining the HarmoS concordat and special education, these problems have been exacerbated. To better achieve the integration school, the FSS has created a whole catalog of requests addressed to the Department of Education. Including the vision that each class has two rooms and that there is a curative educator everywhere in addition to the teacher. "It's just very expensive," says Schwegler.
That goes too far for Basel's director of elementary schools, Dieter Baur. "The separation may be good in some cases, but I do not see it as a complete solution," says Baur.
After all, the Department of Education came at the request of the FSS and announced last week introductory courses for children who were not yet ready for school. And in the end, parenting is also the duty of education.
