Total chaos: dead during demonstrations in Haiti

According to media reports, at least seven people were killed in fierce demonstrations against a projected increase in fuel prices in Haiti. The HPN news agency reported Saturday that she had been killed during the looting of Port-au-Prince.

The police also mentioned the number of deaths, but did not mention the exact number.

Protesters set fire to the streets of the capital Port-au-Prince, attacked shops, attacked hotels and lit up cars, reported the Metropole radio station. Sporadic shots were fired.

Other cities, such as Les Cayes, Jérémie, Cap-Haïtien and Jacmel, also witnessed strong protests. The country's airports have been closed.

The government then reduced the price increase up to 50 percent for the time being. "We condemn violence and vandalism," writes Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant on Twitter

Haiti is considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The state of the Caribbean is largely dependent on foreign aid, with widespread corruption and violence. (sda / dpa)
