What the Huawei P30 Pro has on its hat with toothbrushes

If you want to check your emails, make phone calls and send WhatsApp messages to a smartphone, you do not need a P30 Pro. Huawei's new high-end smartphone is aimed at photo enthusiasts, Instagram fans, and even those who like to spy on their neighbors. Because the biggest innovation on the Huawei Premium-Phone is the camera system, including the 50x zoom.

Cameras: 50x zoom and "level of embellishment"

A total of 5 cameras are installed on the P30 Pro. On the back, the camera is endowed with a wide-angle 40-megapixel camera, an ultra wide-angle 20-megapixel camera, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens and a camera in flight time. TOF cameras use infrared pulses to determine the distances of objects and determine their nature. On the front, the P30 Pro has a 32 megapixel camera. The device also has a 5x optical zoom, a 10x hybrid zoom and a 50x mechanical zoom.

Basically, the P30 Pro provides high quality images across the group – even in very low light – and offers many interesting photo and video features to try. Like the slow motion function, underwater mode and many filters for photos and videos. Even with the zoom can play for a long time. The 50x zoom gives surprisingly good results. However, it was not possible to take pictures of the same quality as those presented by Huawei at the launch of the P-30 Pro in Paris. In addition, it is strongly recommended to use a tripod during a sturdy zoom, as each oscillation worsens the result.

The P30 Pro does not sleep at night. However, with a maximum ISO classification of 409,600, the camera manages to take well-lit photos even when the light is dim. In the city, where there is always a source of light somewhere, you get crisp and clear images with night mode and normal photo adjustment. The camera is able to brighten the images to such an extent that one would think that they were created during the day. If you zoom in before dark, the quality of the photos will be reduced. Especially if it exceeds the 5x zoom. The macro shooting function, which absolutely convinces in the light of the day as at dusk and allows to capture objects at a distance of 2.5 centimeters in the details, leaves something to be desired in the dark.

If you still want to look absolutely perfect on selfies or if you are not satisfied with your complexion, you will probably like the "degree of beautification". If the camera is intended for a person, the smartphone can make the face thinner, the skin lighter and the complexion lighter or tanned.

A little criticism about the photos: Artificial intelligence (AI) intervenes noticeably during shooting, to maximize the quality of the image, which gives the photos a slightly artificial note. Users who want realistic and unmodified photos may be disturbed.

Video: jerks and twinkles with the image stabilizer

Even with videos, long-range objects can be recognized in detail with the 15x zoom. Small smears are here with autofocus. The poorer the lighting conditions, the less the focus at maximum zoom is successful. If the camera is capable of capturing moving objects in the videos, it will be a little boring if the person behind the camera moves itself. During walking and jogging, the automatic image stabilizer intervenes so much that small stuttering and a slight flicker creep into the video.

The editorial team would also have liked to try the manufacturer's dual video feature, which allows Huawei to simultaneously shoot from two distances. Unfortunately, the feature was not yet available and should be provided later by means of a software update.

Battery: really a lot of power – also for the toothbrush

The P30 Pro has, like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, a battery of 4200 milliamperes hours and therefore a lot of power. With regular use, one charge of the battery is enough for two days. In order to determine if the battery can be 70% charged in 30 minutes, as promised by the manufacturer, the publishers tried to empty the battery as quickly as possible. For this, she let the phone play a video in full HD quality for 3 hours. The battery fell at the beginning of this period from 48 to 20%.

Again, two hours later, the P30 finally had more juice and now: the device does what it promises. Within 30 minutes, the battery level was again at 70%. Thanks to the reverse charging function, you can charge other smartphones, portable devices (even from the competition) and other QI compatible devices via the P30 Pro. So, the Huawei phone has managed to give it enough power to brush an electric toothbrush again.

Unlock: Please look in the camera

The P30 Pro can be unlocked by fingerprint recognition and facial recognition. Unlocking by PIN code, reason or password is also possible. Face recognition is very fast, unlocking usually only takes a second or less. Even the first capture of the face is done in about 10-15 seconds. However, make sure that the face is kept directly in the camera the first time you capture it, otherwise you will often need several attempts later to unlock it.

The unlocking of fingerprints takes a little longer than the unlocking by face detection, but remains very fast. With cold or wet fingers, the device has some problems. So often, a second or third attempt is necessary. The first scan of the fingerprint takes a little longer than the face detection. About 1 to 2 minutes are needed here.

Design: The Notch is always there. And the audio jack?

Huawei has not yet said goodbye to Notch. But with its 6.64 millimeters, it is very small and barely disturbs the 6.47-inch OLED display. The rounded edges give the impression that the device is thinner, but prove a little awkward when entering messages. Anyone who is tired of plain black could be happy with the choice of colors on the P 30 Pro. The device is available in "Amber Sunrise", a bright orange red, "Breathing Crystal", a gradient of colors from white to violet blue, "Aurora", a gradient of turquoise to dark blue and "black", a – well – black.

As nice as the different colors, it is best to use the device with a phone case. Because it slips quite easily from the hand. Read how you can protect your smartphone from the dreaded "Spider App". The audio jack is no longer there like the Mate 20 Pro. Headphones are used via the USB-C input. Major disadvantage: unlike the Mate 20 Pro, the P30 Pro does not include an adapter for headphones with a standard 3.5 mm audio jack. What's in the P30 Pro shackle is visible in the unboxing video.

Additional Features: Calorie Counter and Shopping Assistant

The artificial intelligence of the P30 Pro is not only available when shooting and shooting the course, but also with some additional features. The device therefore has a calorie counter, which – when it is judged on something edible – indicates the weight of the object and, in addition to the number of calories, it also indicates the fat and carbohydrate content. However, the weight of the food provided by the P30 Pro was generally 20 to 40 grams at the time of the test. As a result, the calorie indication was not completely correct.

KI is also in the shopping feature of Huawei. When the camera is held on an object, the camera looks for products that look like it as much as possible and indicates where to buy them. A translation program is still in the new smartphone. However, do not rely too much on it, as it seems to translate only texts literally.

The technical details of the P30 Pro can be found in the table below:

conclusion:

Above all, the P30 Pro convinces with its camera and the new zoom functions. Even in very low light, it produces high resolution and high quality photos. The more you zoom into the dark, the more you have to compromise on the quality of the image. The device provides fun artificial intelligence functions, such as the calorie counter and the purchase function, which, if only for fun, must absolutely be tried. The P30 Pro battery has a battery life of 2 days and can be recharged very quickly thanks to the 40 watt Super Charge charger. Basically, the P30 Pro is an excellent device for photo enthusiasts and holds almost all the promises.

The test device of the P30 Pro Pro has been made available to the editorial team of Huawei.
