Laaaangweilig! When we look at the smartphone industry only comes on a tired yawn. The smallest advances are sold shamelessly as a revolution, while true technological leaps have been waiting for years – at least until now. For once again, Samsung has managed to breathe new life into the Galaxy Fold of an almost clinically dead industry.
Samsung not only celebrates a small birthday this year with the launch of the Galaxy S10, but also the author of these lines. Exactly ten years ago, I bought my very first smartphone, a Motorola Milestone. Without wishing to act like a soldier tired of the war: During these ten years, I have really seen everything. From the sad fall of HTC to the insignificance, to Huawei's dizzying rise, to the spectacular failure of Microsoft to finally have a foothold in the mobile phone market.
First laughed, then copied: the Samsung Galaxy Note
Maybe that's why I have to smile if I listen now to the reviews of Galaxy Fold. Too foldable, Samsung's collapsible smartphone, too immature technology and a price of $ 1,900, of course, too expensive. The thugs are somehow familiar … Oh yes, that's exactly what you said in 2011 when you introduced the very first Galaxy Note. At a time when the diagonal of the 3.5 inch screen of the iPhone was the measure of all things, Samsung had to listen to the 5.3-inch screen of the note. origin. The South Koreans were successful because only a few years later, all known mobile phone manufacturers were adding XXL smartphones to the program, including Apple.
The same game was repeated when Samsung introduced the rounded edges of the screen: "Who needs something like this?" Or "Totally useless!" Some of the friendliest comments on the dashboards. And today? From Huawei to Xiaomi via Sony, all the famous Android manufacturers use rounded-edge screens. Again, Samsung was right in the end. The one who laughs the last laughs the best known.
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Fold during an uncompressed event:
With the Galaxy Fold, Samsung radically rethinks the smartphone
Now, Samsung once again proves the courage to break with conventions and create something new. And history repeats itself: once again, complainants come out of their anthill and criticize society for its new ways of denying it. Radically rethink the "smartphone".
That the Galaxy Fold is a bestseller, I dare to doubt it. Even if the price goes down, the $ 1,900 EIA is so high that it is unlikely that the folding phone will enter the mass market. But that's not the question. Even the first Galaxy Note with dashboard was extremely expensive at the time and was not intended for the general public. Nevertheless, he introduced Samsung into the trade.
Other manufacturers are also working on collapsible smartphones, behind closed doors:

At some point, simulations or internal tests are no longer enough: at some point, a new product must come onto the market and deal with it. It is only then that strengths and weaknesses can be objectively assessed in order to exploit them. This requires courage, however.
This is not the 27th infusion of a category of devices that has been practically completed, but a completely new product. I applaud Samsung for that! That they do not continue to develop the Galaxy Fold in the quiet little room until the day of Santa Claus, but that they have the courage to make their smartphone Folding public – with all the positive consequences or negative consequences that may result.
And if, in two or three years, the Galaxy Fold 3 appears, which has eliminated all the problems of youth of its predecessors, all detractors will remember the courage of Samsung. After all, even in the smartphone industry, the longest journey begins with the first step.
