President of the United States, Donald Trump, said he had canceled a secret meeting with the Taliban in the United States.
The leaders were to meet at Camp David on Sunday.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the talks with the Taliban were now "dead at the moment" and that the special envoy was being recalled. Meetings between the envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad and the Taliban had been taking place in Qatar for almost a year.
The Taliban issued a statement in response, saying that "Americans will suffer more than anyone" because of Trump's decision to cancel the talks.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani's office said peace would only be possible if the Taliban stopped launching attacks and held direct talks with the government.
