Thursday night’s game against the Giants won’t be quarterback Taylor Heinicke’s first start in NFL career, but it gives him a different opportunity than the first two.

Heinicke started a game for the 2018 Panthers as they played the losing season streak and he performed well in Washington’s loss to the Buccaneers to the Buccaneers last season, but never seemed to have a real chance to do a long job once. Ryan Fitzpatrick signed with the team. Fitzpatrick is in the injured reserve after sustaining a hip injury in Week 1, which means Heinicke is considering several games to get noticed as an NFL starter.

“Something I’ve dreamed of my whole life, being a starting quarterback in the NFL, and here we are,” Heinicke said, via Ben Standig of TheAthletic.com. “I really try to take it one day at a time, one meeting at a time, one room at a time. I feel like if I just live in the moment, everything else will take care of itself.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin expressed confidence in Heinicke because the quarterback is “still up for the moment” and proving McLaurin right could lead to many more starts in Heinicke’s future.
