TCHS golfer Chandler Ash watches teammate Luke Deaton putt in recent game
The TCHS golf team finished the action in its fourth week of the eight-week season. The rain affected their play again, canceling one game and delaying another.
The Knights hosted four other teams in a game on Monday, August 23.
It was a very hot evening, but it also produced good team scores. Ritchie walked away with the highest honors, totaling 167 for four players. The other team scores were: Linsly – 175; Tyler – 175 (lost in fifth player tiebreaker), Frontier – 183; and Paden City with three players.
For TCHS, junior Landen Miller led the way with his round of six over par, 40. Knight’s other scores included Mason Nichols – 42; Chandler Ash – 45; Luc Deaton – 48; Trenton Webster -55; Cole Moore – 57; Colby Nichols – 58; and Cooper Clayton – 61.
For Paden City, players included Will McGinnis – 44; Liam Clements – 61; and Aaron Thorn -68. The medalist was Adam Gill of Ritchie with 36 on the Par-34 course.
“He was another scorcher”, Coach Joe Griffith said. “But for all the teams, shooting under 185 means the heat hasn’t affected their game so much. I think they’re acclimating to the heat.
Co-captain Mason Nichols summed up his turn by saying: “I didn’t play as well as I wanted on Monday, but I had some good recovery shots.”
On Wednesday August 25, the team traveled north to the Crispin course in Oglebay Park, but when they got off the bus to see black skies to the west, it didn’t look good for the match.
The teams waited inside for the lightning and rain to subside, but when it became clear that the last group wouldn’t start until at least 6 p.m. and therefore would not finish by nightfall of the night, the coaches canceled the match. He will not be caught because of the number of matches already scheduled.
On Thursday, August 26, the team descended on the WV Golf Club along Rt. 31 south of Waverly to face seven other LKC teams. A downpour encountered the team as they entered the course and saw a small river of runoff cross the parking lot and flood the practice green. But after a short delay, the storm calmed down and the teams started.
St. Marys finished in first place with his team’s score of 164. Other scores included: Ritchie – 178; Williamstown – 187; Wahama – 188; Tyler – 209; and Wirt – 260. Ravenswood had two players, while Parkersburg Catholic had three players. The medalist was Gavin Bosgraf of Williamstown on his home run with a round two over par, 38.
For the TCHS team, Mason Nichols and Chandler Ash both had 47, Colby Nichols 57, Luke Deaton was one shot 58 and Cole Moore finished with 67.
The soggy fairways and greens, as well as very wet conditions after the rain, made some golfers difficult.
“On some of the starting boxes, there was no way to avoid staying in the occasional water while hitting your records.” Coach Griffith said. “And there was almost no roll for the ball once it hit the ground.”
“The soggy greens of the GCWV were really difficult to set up”, Luke Deaton said after his first time on the course. “But at least we got to play. I was really disappointed that our game in the Crispin Hills was called off.
As of mid-season, the team’s record is now 13-33.
Two high school games this week included: Monday August 30 at Switzerland of Ohio against Barnesville, Monroe Central and St. Clairsville. Yesterday the team made the long river trip to Mason, WV, to play Riverside Golf Course against Wahama, Williamstown, Ravenswood and Parkersburg Catholic. Last year’s game at Riverside ended after about two holes due to lightning. The team will welcome Magnolia next Wednesday.
The college golf team sees its first action this afternoon with a home game at Sistersville Country Club. Opponents include Parkersburg Catholic and Ritchie Middle Schools. Next Tuesday, the college team will travel to the Marietta Country Club to take on Marietta and Blennerhassett Colleges.
Assistant Coach David Tucker is excited for the upcoming college games: “We have eight golfers this year, six of whom have solid golfing experience under their belt. Two new golfers get better with every practice. It’s a great group of players to work with.
