Ted Lasso Season 2: The Biggest Apple TV Plus Audiences Yet

Drafting its 20 recent Emmy nominations, the Season 2 premiere episode of “Ted Lasso” has garnered the largest audiences of any original movie or TV show on Apple TV Plus, according to Apple.

The soccer comedy series, run by Jason Sudeikis as America’s Fish Out of Water Coach, has had more Apple TV Plus accounts that premiered S2 on Friday, July 23 and throughout its week. -end opening (July 23-25), than any previous launch, says the tech giant.

It sounds impressive, but it is unclear how many people are actually connected.

Apple is still not releasing actual viewership counts. (The company also did not disclose how many Apple TV Plus subscribers it has racked up.) Streaming services have been reluctant to release specific numbers for competitive reasons; when they have the ones who are usually handpicked to tout success. Netflix, for its part, has published the number of households that have “chosen” to stream a given title (counting the number of accounts that have streamed a title for at least two minutes).

“Ted Lasso” may be the biggest show to date on Apple TV Plus, but that may not mean much in the context of the SVOD service’s total user base. According to third-party data analyzed last week by the Variety Intelligence Platform, the first episode of “Ted Lasso” S1 – previously Apple TV Plus’ most-watched premiere – ranked 89th overall among other titles measured on streaming platforms from November 1, 2019 – July 18, 2021.

While Apple won’t release specific numbers for Season 2 of “Ted Lasso,” the company said the show “grew its audience 6 times over the first season” – for what it’s worth. During the “Ted Lasso” Season 2 premiere weekend, Apple TV Plus increased its new viewership by a record 50% week after week; again, however, the company offers no context for what this means in terms of audience size.

As you might expect, Season 2 of “Ted Lasso” continues to “increase viewership and engagement” for the show’s first season, according to Apple. S2’s debut also increased audiences for Apple TV Plus comedies like “Schmigadoon,” “Physical,” and “Mythic Quest” from July 23 to 25, but the company hasn’t quantified what that lift might have been. .

In the series, Sudeikis plays Ted Lasso, an American football coach hired to lead a British football team, although he has no experience. But what he lacks in knowledge he makes up for with optimism, underdog determination and cookies (which means “cookies” here in the United States).

Alongside Sudeikis, “Ted Lasso” stars Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster and Nick Mohammed. Sarah Niles is expected to join the cast this season as Sharon, a sports psychologist who has been brought in to work with AFC Richmond.

In addition to playing the lead role, Sudeikis is an executive producer, alongside Bill Lawrence through his Doozer Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group. Jeff Ingold of Doozer is also an executive producer with Liza Katzer as the co-executive producer. The series was developed by Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly, and is based on the pre-existing NBC Sports format and characters.

Earlier this month, “Ted Lasso” won 20 Primetime Emmy nominations, making history the most-nominated freshman comedy series of all time. The loot included a nod for a comedy series, a lead actor in a comedy series for Sudeikis, two nominations for a supporting actress in a comedy series for Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple, and four nominations for a supporting actor. in a comedy series for Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein, Jeremy Swift and Nick Mohammed. In addition, the series garnered three nominations for directing a comedy series; two nominations for writing a comedy series; and two nominations for editing a single image in a comedy series.

Sudeikis won a Golden Globe this year for “Ted Lasso”, which was also nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
