BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) – A perfectly healthy 17-year-old girl is now fighting for her life in intensive care after suffering from what is believed to be a rare disease linked to COVID-19.
Kaylee Litteral of Boyd County is being treated for MIS-C. According to the CDC, it is a “multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children where different parts of the body can become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes or gastrointestinal organs. -intestinal ”.
Symptoms include fever and various symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes, or feeling extremely tired.
The CDC says the cause of the illness is not known, but says many children with MIS-C had the virus that causes COVID-19 or had been around someone with COVID-19.
Kaylee’s mother says her daughter recently tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies. It was a surprise as she had never tested positive for the virus. They think she had it, but was asymptomatic.
“I sit here and look at her and think it’s unreal,” Kaylee’s mom April said. “From a pandemic, my baby is sitting here fighting for his life.”
MIS-C is mostly found in children between the ages of 1 and 14, but there have been patients as old as 20 years old.
“If I could let one of the parents or anyone know… don’t just think ‘Oh that’s just COVID’ or ‘They didn’t have bad symptoms.’ The side effects are just as bad. “
April says her daughter has shown improvement and has been withdrawn from certain medications, but is still considered critical.
“I just have to sit here and watch this horrible disease touch my child and it’s completely out of my hands. It’s in the hands of the Lord.
April tells the WSAZ that she and her family have been inundated with messages and prayers as they await a miracle.
“My family, we believe in a miracle. Kaylee is a fighter. She has always been a fighter. She is strong.
