GREENWOOD, Indiana (WISH) – A teenager has died and a second teenager is in critical condition after an accident in Greenwood on Thursday, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Just after 7 p.m., MPs were called to the 1600 block of South Paddock Road in Greenwood for a report of a single vehicle accident.

After attending the scene, MPs saw a gray 2004 Volkswagen enter a tree on the west side of South Paddock Road.

The two occupants – the driver and a passenger – had to be extricated from the vehicle by teams.

The passenger, Austin Norris, 16, of Greenwood, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, Hunter Riffle, 16, of Greenwood, was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses told MPs that before the fatal crash, the Volkswagen was heading south on Paddock Road at high speed.
