Proximie, a start-up that allows clinicians to virtually “taste” to support remote interventions, has entered into a partnership with Teladoc. The telehealth giant will integrate Proximie’s software into its virtual care platform for hospitals and health systems. While the deal will initially focus on the United States, they plan to expand it globally.
Founded by surgeon Dr Nadine Hachach-Haram, London-based Proximie uses augmented reality to allow surgeons to oversee operations remotely, with the ability to show their peers where to make an incision or how to use a particular technique in using physical gestures. Essentially, it allows them to bring their expertise to the operating room without actually being there.
With the integration of Teladoc, Proximie could be used for surgical mentoring, monitoring and technical expertise. Surgeons and other healthcare professionals can also get feedback through the platform.
The agreement would also be a boon for Proximie’s business. With Teladoc’s network of more than 600 healthcare systems, it would have faster access to the market than going it alone.
Proximie is not the only company to turn to virtual tools to make surgeries more fluid. OssoVR based in San Francisco builds a virtual reality platform for surgical training. He recently deployed a feature for users to assess their knowledge of specific workflows and how to react when things don’t go as planned during a procedure.
