Tennessee has announced that Holly Warlick, the Lady Flights coach for seven seasons, would no longer be the head coach on Wednesday afternoon. Here is the official declaration of the university:
Tennessee Sports Director Phillip Fulmer announced Wednesday that Holly Warlick, a basketball coach from Lady Vols, had been dismissed.
"Holly and I met this afternoon and I informed her of the decision to change leadership within the program," said Fulmer. "Holly has spent most of her adult life at the University of Tennessee and the Lady Flights program. She loves Tennessee, and Tennessee must always love it in return. She was at the forefront of the development of this program in the model of intercollegiate excellence of women.
"While making this decision is tricky, I am responsible for doing what I feel is best for this historic program. It is important for all of us that the Lady Vols basketball keeps its status among the elite. "
A national search for the next Head Coach Lady Vols is underway. Assistant Coach Dean Lockwood will provide operational oversight of the program until a coach is hired.
Warlick set a general record of 172-67 in seven seasons as Tennessee's head coach, guiding the Lady Flights to NCAA tournaments for each campaign.
Tennessee has won three SEC Trophies during her term as head coach, winning regular season championships in 2013 and 2015 and winning the SEC tournament title in 2014.
She guided Lady Vols' stakes at Elite Eight in 2013, 2015 and 2016. And Tennessee produced 11 WNBA draft picks during the Warlick era.
Warlick has also maintained the long-standing 100 percent Lady Flight graduation rate for players who have completed their university career in Tennessee.
A native of Knoxville and an American Lady Flyer from 1976 to 1980, Warlick was assistant coach and assistant head coach of her alma mater for 27 seasons, from 1985 to 2012, before spending seven seasons as a coach. chief. After more than thirty years of dedicated service at the University of Tennessee, she has just wrapped up her 38th season of affiliation to the program, helping to establish women's athletic excellence as a standard bearer.
As a player or staff member, she has participated in 19 Tennessee trips in the Final Four and the eight national championships of the program (1987, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2007 and 2008).
Warlick's association with the University of Tennessee began in 1976, when she joined the women's track and field program as a 400-meter rider. She eventually joined the basketball team and became one of the most prolific players in the program's history. She was the first player in athletics in Tennessee (men or women) to see her jersey removed (# 22) at the conclusion of her eligibility.
Warlick's training honors are also numerous. In 2013, members of the Women's Basketball Coaching Association awarded her the title of Spalding Maggie Dixon's Division I Rookie Coach. She was selected by the SEC coach and the SEC's 2013 coach of the year in the league. Members of the Tennessee Writers' Association Sports Writers have also chosen her to be the TSWA Women's Basketball Coach of the Year.
In May 2017, Warlick was honored for her years of leadership, volunteer work, philanthropic work, and professional accomplishments that helped improve the quality of life in Tennessee. She was named Tennessee Wife of Distinction at the 32nd Chattanooga Women of Distinction Awards Luncheon. In 2019, she became a member of the Pat Summitt Foundation Advisory Board.
She is a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame (2001), the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame (2004), the Grand Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame (1994) and the Athletics Hall of Fame. University of Tennessee (2002).
Warlick's philanthropic efforts have brought tremendous benefits to the community throughout his tenure at Rocky Top.
