Health officials in Georgia have identified the first death related to spraying in the state, bringing to at least 10 the total number of deaths due to lung disease that resembles a rare form of pneumonia in the states -United.
While the patient had a history of heavy use of electronic cigarettes, doctors said the victim had not turned THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, announced Wednesday the Ministry of Health. Public Health of Georgia.
The state is investigating nine cases, including the deceased patient. Most of the patients are young men, aged 18 to 68, with a median age of 26, the state said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week that the mysterious lung disease had sickened 530 people in the United States; Hundreds of others have been reported in recent days, a CDC official told a US legislature Tuesday.
Health officials have linked the disease to vaping, although they are still trying to identify the exact cause. State and federal governments have taken steps in recent weeks to remove flavored electronic cigarette pods from store shelves in the face of an alarming increase in teenage use and the recent wave of deaths.
