It was no surprise that Terence Crawford eliminated Amir Khan in their WBO welterweight title bout on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York.
What was surprising was the way it had happened.
Crawford dominated Khan, dropping him in the first round and beating him. But at the beginning of the sixth round, Crawford hit Khan with a very weak blow. After a delay, Khan told his coach, Virgil Hunter, that he could not continue, and referee David Fields stopped him.
Crawford was declared the winner at 47 seconds of the sixth round. He now has a record of 35-0 and has done nothing to reduce his argument that he is the best fighter from the pound to the pound.
Crawford concentrated his attack up to the head to get out of an early right-wing position. In the fourth, he moved to the Swedish paw, as he usually did, and began tearing Khan's body.
Khan was touted as Crawford's toughest opponent, but he did nothing to make this fight memorable.
There was not much controversy about the end, even though the night was not without it. Crawford's promoter, Bob Arum, put Al Haymon, champion boxing champion. Crawford then stated that he wanted to fight Errol Spence Jr., the IBF champion, in what would be a fight between the two best fighters of the pound to the pound according to Yahoo Sports.
Arum let Haymon have it only seconds after the fight.
"Listen, we want to fight Errol Spence," said Arum. "Terence wants it. I think Errol wants the fight. There is a guy who stops him. It's Al Haymon. Each boxing fan should refuse to support Haymons' fights until he agrees that Spence fight Crawford. "
This type of tactic is unlikely to work, although public pressure could. If the public demands it and then demands it, it could happen.
It would be a much more competitive and memorable fight than the public had against Khan, who was nowhere else in Crawford's class.
He fell sharply in the first match and was saved from the first round by the bell. There was no other overthrow, but Crawford was in control and seemed about to finish it at the moment of the blow.
Hunter asked Fields to stop the fight after consulting Khan.
"He took her legs, so what else can you do?" Said Hunter. "I asked him if he could continue and he said no."
