It appears that test production of the Tesla Model Y is in full swing at Gigafactory Texas. This was hinted at in a recently shared video featuring rare footage of the upcoming plant’s vehicle production area.
Following the 2021 Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, Maye Musk posted a few clips on her Instagram account. The short clips featured several views of Gigafactory Texas, from its expansive exterior to an area of the facility that was obviously busy. Elon Musk could be seen carrying Baby X while walking alongside his brother, Kimbal.
While the post feels more like a regular family update on the Musks, Maye’s Instagram post also featured a rare glimpse of what appears to be Gigafactory Texas’ newly built Model Y production area. Several Tesla Model Ys could be seen at different stages of assembly, and at least one unit appears to be nearing completion.
Interestingly enough, the Model Ys in the recently shared clip were painted black, making them very similar to a pre-production Model Y that was briefly shared online in late August. The black Model Y, the image of which was posted to Instagram but quickly deleted later, was said to have been one of the first pre-production units made at Gigafactory Texas.
Considering that Tesla appears to be on the right track with pre-production of the Model Y at Giga Texas, it wouldn’t be surprising if completed units of the crossover were spotted out in the wild in the coming months. As a result of these tests, it would likely only be a matter of time before production and customer deliveries begin for the Model Y in Texas.
Tesla originally planned that its Texas-made Model Y would launch with 4,680 batteries, which are currently being produced in a pilot line at the company’s Kato Road plant. As Tesla waits for its 4,680 batteries to be properly ramped up, however, speculation abounds that the company could start production of the Model Y at Giga Texas with 2,170 cells instead. It’s a strategy Tesla would also adopt for the Gigafactory Berlin, whose 4,680-cell plant is still under construction.
