Tesla recalls more than 9,000 Model X SUVs over small parts that can come loose while driving

Tesla has issued a new recall to NHTSA for 9,000 Model X SUVs built in 2015 and 2016 on body parts that can come loose while driving due to a lack of primer.

The company is not aware of any accident caused by the fault.

The problem is with two cosmetic parts on the roof of the Model X:

The Model X is fitted with a cosmetic applique on the front of the roof just behind the windshield, known as the front applique, as well as an applique in the center of the roof between the upper window of the Falcon door , known as the spine applique. The two appliques are glued to the vehicle using urethane. If the applique-urethane interface lacks primer, over time adhesion may weaken causing the applique to separate from the vehicle.

Although the parts are cosmetic in nature, the fear is that they could come apart while driving and become hazards to other vehicles.

Tesla is not aware of any accidents caused by the issue.

They became aware of the problem after the missing parts on a Model X and started an investigation.

Here is the chronology of the recall:

  • On September 21, 2020, Field Quality was made aware of a field event involving a 2016 Model X with a missing applique. Field Quality has launched an investigation into the root cause and frequency of the disease.
  • On October 28, 2020, after performing parts recovery, service station reviews, and engineering fleet analysis, Tesla tentatively concluded that the failed components did not have enough urethane interface primer. -applies when produced by the supplier. Field Quality then began a review of production records and supplier process information to obtain evidence of the primer application to understand the possible scope. Field quality reviewed the results with the management team.
  • On November 10, 2020, Tesla determined that there is a safety-related flaw for the affected population.

It’s a recall because of the safety hazard the parts can cause if they come loose while driving, but Tesla also notes that they can cause noise inside the cabin.

Tesla believes that as many as 9,136 Model X SUVs built between September 17, 2015 and July 31, 2016 could be affected.

Owners will be contacted and will need to bring their vehicles for service.

Tesla service technicians will perform a test to make sure the applique parts have been installed correctly, and if not, will repair them.
