Tesla Semi Production Line at New Nevada Building Sets Goal of 5 Electric Trucks Per Week

Tesla is building a new Tesla Semi production line in a new building near its Gigafactory Nevada plant and plans to produce five electric trucks per week, according to people familiar with the matter.

Over the past few weeks we have tried to assess the situation regarding Tesla Semi production after some vague comments from Elon Musk about the program being limited by the production of battery cells.

Now we are getting some clarity from reliable sources.

Last year, Electrek reported that Tesla has taken over a large building over 500,000 square feet in the industrial park where Tesla Gigafactory Nevada is located.

At the time, we couldn’t be sure of the manufacturer’s plan for the building, but we had indications that it had to do with the production of Tesla Semi.

Now we can confirm that the building, which is at 550 Milan Drive (pictured above) next to another building used as a warehouse by Tesla, houses a new production line for Tesla Semi currently being rolled out by the automaker. .

Reliable sources familiar with the matter told Electrek that Tesla is currently building a low-volume Tesla Semi production line in the building.

When completed, they expect a production capacity of five Tesla semi-electric trucks per week.

The plan is still for volume production at Gigafactory Austin once Tesla can also ramp up battery cell production there.

Taking Electrek

This could result in more Tesla Semi production than most people expected, especially after Elon’s recent comments.

This morning we conducted a survey and the majority of respondents believed Tesla would produce less than 50 Tesla Semi trucks in 2021:

While that prediction may still prove to be correct, if Tesla can hit that target by Q4, we’re talking about 60 Tesla semi-electric trucks this year.

This would be a good start for the program, which has experienced many delays over the years.

Of course, the target is much higher production once the program is transferred to Gigafactory Austin and Tesla can achieve a high production volume of 4,680 battery cells.

Musk even mentioned that Tesla could potentially produce 100,000 electric semi-trailers a year.

In my opinion, we are at least 3-4 years away from this, but I think it is a real possibility due to the potential of Tesla Semi to significantly reduce the cost of freight transportation.

Tesla already has thousands of reservations for the vehicle, and if they can prove the economy in the real world, it can be assumed that it would have a huge impact on the industry.
