The 2021 NFL Draft presents a unique challenge this year. Not only was there no NFL Combine to help assess players both on and off the court, but many players in this year’s class have limited rosters due to a shortened college season. or a disengagement. This is a year in which teams will really have to trust the hard work of their tireless scouting team.
Believe it or not, this could give the Detroit Lions a leg up on the rest of the league. That’s because, according to Inside the League’s Neil Stratton, the Lions scouting staff are collectively the oldest staff in the NFL.
“The Lions have a large permanent scout department, so it’s no wonder [sic] they led the way with 268 years of scouting in total, by our tally, ”Statton wrote.
Here’s the catch, however. This study was carried out in August under the old regime. With new CEO Brad Holmes, the testing service is likely to change. However, many current scouts go back to diets long before Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia. Regional scout Dave Uyrus has been with the squad since 2000. Director of player personnel Lance Newmark – who recently received accolades from Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell – has been in Detroit since 1998.
And as for some of the changes to come, the outlook for who Holmes might be brought with him already looks positive:

Of course, being an incumbent alone doesn’t mean you’re good at your job. After all, the Lions editorial history has been scattered at best. But it is important to remember that it is the job of these Scouts to collect information, not to use it. They evaluate the players; the executives make the choices.
Experience is invaluable in this business, just like any other business. Experience allows everyone to learn from their mistakes, find ways to work effectively, and make valuable connections with reliable sources.
So in April, when all of the scouting department’s work is on display for all 32 teams, the Lions can – perhaps – get a head start on the competition.
